SAULT YOUTH FORUM 2011

In January 2011, the Sault Youth Association launched the Youth Strategy Research Initiative. This initiative is supported through funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation and the City of Sault Ste. Marie. The intention of this work is to identify the quality of life indicators as expressed by the youth of our community. Through surveys, focus groups and one-to-one interviews over 500 young people between the ages of 14- 29 yrs. have expressed what their needs and priorities are to improve their quality of life in Sault Ste. Marie.

On May 12 th , 2011, close to 70 youth gathered at the Bushplane Museum to participate in Youth Forum 2011. Also in attendance were MPP David Orazietti and Councillors Butland and Sheehan. There was a diverse cross-representation of youth participants that included: high school students; college/university students, professionals, artists, entrepreneurs and concerned citizens. The intention of the forum was to present back to the youth the common themes they brought forward in the Youth Strategy Research Initiative
Forum participants broke off into 6 groups and worked together to develop strategies to address eight trends identified in the research: Improving Local Transportation System; Alleviating Poverty; Sustainable Housing; Increasing Creative Spaces; Becoming an Inclusive Community; Improving Communication Strategies; Reducing Drug/Alcohol Abuse and Access; and Improving Job Market.

"I can't believe the energy in this place tonight. It just feels really great," expressed a participant. "I hope we can keep this going. There needs to be more discussion."

The ideas generated from this event will inspire a second forum that will bring together young people and community decision makers to develop an action plan respective of the needs identified throughout the research process. It is significant to mention that the issues raised by young people are concerns shared by the community at large. The scope of the Youth Strategy Research Initiative encompasses the quality of life for all citizens of Sault Ste. Marie. Please contact Steffanie Date, Executive Director for further information:
