Algoma University Athletics and Thunderbirds Men's Basketball Head Coach Thomas Cory are pleased to announce that 5'10" Guard Joey Puddister has committed to Algoma U for the 2011-12 season. Puddister joins Algoma U from West Ferris High School in North Bay, where he started as a member of the Trojans for the past 2 seasons. While at West Ferris High, he was also a member of the Football and Tennis varsity teams. Puddister will be enrolling in the Psychology program at Algoma University in the fall.
"I'm really looking forward to continuing my basketball career at Algoma University," said Puddister. "The program has really grown since Coach Cory took over. He is great at building teams and developing players. I'm looking forward to working hard, getting better, contributing to the team and beginning my post-secondary studies in Sault Ste. Marie."
Puddister led his team to the OFSAA "AA" tournament Quarterfinals this past season, and has been a part of two NOSSA "AA" championship teams. He averaged double figures in scoring as a starting guard the past two seasons at West Ferris. Puddister also has extensive club team experience as a starter for the West Ferris Spartans Basketball Club the past 4 seasons.
Coach Cory said Puddister will be a welcome addition to next year's squad. "I am very pleased that Joey has decided to play for the Thunderbirds next season. He is a very skilled and fundamentally sound player that will give us solid guard play and will compete every day. By all accounts, Joey is a very coachable player who joins our program with a great deal of experience under his belt."
Puddister's High School Coach Larry Tougas is excited to see Joey continue his basketball career at Algoma University. "We know that the Thunderbirds will be a better team with Joey than they were without him, and we look forward to following his ongoing development in the OCAA."
