SAULT COUGARS The Sault College Cougar men’s and women’s basketball teams swept the visiting Redeemer Royals this past Friday in an evening double header. The women started off the night with a 60-45 victory, securing their 2nd win of the OCAA campaign. The Cougars were once again led by local product Cheristy Akiwenzie’s 18 points. Temiskaming native Keisha Giroux had another dominant performance on the glass, pulling in 26 rebounds and adding 13 points. Sudbury Lasalle grad Laura Lehto chipped in with 11, followed by Danielle White’s 9 point and 9 rebound showing.

The Cougar men followed with a 67-48 victory of their own, marking their first of the 2011-2012 OCAA season. The Cougar men had 4 players score in double digits, led by rookie stalwart Donte James who produced 14 points on the evening. Sir James Dunn alum Danny MacDonald followed with 12, Odane Ferguson 11 and Terell Carr’s 10. The game also saw the return of last year’s OCAA rookie of the year, Randy Frimpong who was good for 9 points and 9 rebounds on the night.

The Saturday match up versus the Niagara Knights did not see the same fate for either Cougar squad. The woman dropped a 69-39 decision after Niagara exploded for a 28 point third quarter. Leading the way for the Cougars once again was the back court combination of Laura Lehto and Cheristy Akiwenzie who had 16 and 11 points respectively.

The Sault College men then dropped a 98-70 decision versus a talented Niagara men’s team. The men again had 4 players hitting double digits. Terell Carr and Jason Ledgister both dropped 16 points on the night, followed by Randy Frimpong’s 12 points and 13 rebounds. Donte James 10 points rounded out the group.

This weekend the Cougar men and women head to St. Clair and Lambton for a Saturday and Sunday double header. The St. Clair women are currently sitting in 8th place, 4 points ahead of the Cougar women. St. Clair men are currently tied with the Cougar’s squad for 9th place. Lambton women are currently tied for 4th place while Lambton men sit in 7th, 4 points ahead of the Sault College men.
