On Sunday morning at Strathclair Fields, the U14 Sault Civics Surge walked away with a split of their Western Ontario Youth Soccer League (WOYSL) series with North London Galaxy.
With under one minute to play in Sunday's game, midfielder Maggie Kirk fired home the winning goal to break a 2-2 deadlock. After surrendering a 2-0 halftime lead, the Civics regrouped for the eventual victory. Mariah Fata and Bailie Malmloff scored the first half goals for the Civics. Megan Girardi made several key saves in goal.
On Saturday night, the Civics came out flat and lost 2-0 to the North London squad at Tom Tipton Park.
Coach Jeff Conley was happy to collect a win on Sunday but admitted frustration. "For the second weekend in a row we came out flat on Saturday and were dominated, then a totally different Soo team shows up on Sunday and pulls out a win. We'll certainly be focused on how we prepare for our next series." Conley did, however, credit his team for rebounding on Sunday, "That's a tough North London team with incredible speed. On Sunday, we were able to hold them to a few good chances and then we capitalized on our scoring chances."
Sunday's win gives the U14 Civics a 2-2-0 WOYSL record heading into a weekend series with Guelph Royals on June 30 and July 1.
