For years the mall, the only retail mall in the small Northern Ontario city has been plagued with leaking issues from the roof - which also serves as a parking lot for the mall.

Three years ago, $1.1 million was spent on the leaking problem caused mostly by expansion joints in the mallís roof parking and some of the concrete slabs.

Expansion joints allow the concrete slabs that make up the mallís roof to expand and contract with the heat and cold. Without such joints the mall would pull itself apart. The Elliot Lake newspaper reported three years ago about the problems at the mall.

The fix however ended up being only a band aid solution to a much more serious structural problem. Authorities have not begun to investigate a cause as of yet, focusing now on rescue efforts. Some area residents

This photo circulating on Facebook following the collapse of the roof crashing down on two floors of the mall Saturday, was taken February of this year showing a major problem with the leaking from the upper floor parking area.

The photo is the same spot where the collapse happened on Saturday. Witnesses report rumbling sounds just before the ceiling of the food court area crashed to the floor. The roof of the mall two floors up.

The mall is home to about 40 stores including a grocery store, Zellers and an attached hotel.

22 people were treated for injuries , meanwhile Police are still saying they believe at least one person is dead - the body seen on a surveillance camera and another person is believed to be trapped under the rubble.
