
The Novice Soo Spartans won the Novice ``B`` Division Championship at the Midland (Ontario) Civitan Invitational Lacrosse Tournament on June 23.
In their first-ever tournament game, the Spartans beat the Midland Braves by a score of 9-1 with hat-tricks from Sean Dodson and Cooper Smyl, a pair of goals from Connor Simms and one from Finn Hartley.
The Spartans dropped a much closer second game against the Newmarket Redbirds by a score of 5-3, with goals from Mitchell Crosato, Thomas Irwin and Nate Collins.
In the Division Championship game against New Tecumseth Renegades, the Spartans won on a strong performance by Spartans goaltender Ross Harris, by a score of 3-1 with a pair of goals from Mitchell Crosato and the game-winner by Cooper Smyl.
Also of note, Logan Hunter led the team in assists – assisting on five of the Spartan’s fifteen tournament goals.
According to Spartans coach Brady Irwin, ``Our team of nine and ten year-old boys have been working hard since January – we could not be happier with the results from our first tournament. ``
The next action for the Novice Soo Spartans is the Nickel City Shootout in Sudbury on July 6-8.
