Matthew Frank KotHappy Canada Day! Today is a day that Canadians from east to west, north to south, in ten provinces and three territories come together to celebrate the continued building of Canada. Since 1867, we have grown from just a small British-controlled dominion with a mere 3 million people to a sovereign country of 34 million. Canada is geographically the second biggest country in the world, but we are the nation with the most pride, for Canada has accomplished so many things in the 145 years since we became a country.

Hockey and basketball are Canadian sports, the electronic microscope, the garbage bag, the Canadarm, all Canadian inventions thought up by Canadian people. Speaking of Canadian people, our nation has much talent, such as Shania Twain, Celine Dion, Avril Lavigne, Justin Bieber.

Canada has also achieved some firsts: A Canadian was the first person with an artificial heart, we were the first country to train female jet pilots, and Canada is the first nation to have a simulated Mars base, located in the arctic.

I AM CANADIANMany events were hosted by Canada to boost our image abroad, including Expo 67 in Montreal, in which over 50 million people from around the world poured into the country to celebrate our centennial. Expo 67' was the highest attended world fair in history. Canada also hosted the Olympics, three times: Montreal 1976, Calgary in '88, and the recent Vancouver Olympics in 2010.

We have much to celebrate as a country. So many people that Canada has produced, so many milestones Canada has achieved, so many events Canada has hosted. So today is a day for patriotism, today is a day we flash our red and white flags, there are many Canada day events for you to attend, go watch the fireworks, go take in Canada's natural beauty, and today, take pride in your country, and always say while you're drinking that ice cold beer, "I am Canadian!
