The second game of the tournament Saturday afternoon found the Spartans facing the always experienced and tough Six Nations Warriors. The Spartans played hard but found themselves on the losing end by a score of 9-4. All 4 Spartan goals were scored by Nick Hrynuik, 1 of which was short-handed. Assisting on Hrynuik's goals were Conner Sonke (2), Nic Klein, Jeremiah Van Benthem, and Cam Thomas. Sonke played an excellent game in the net for the Spartans.
In the final game of the tournament for the Intermediate Spartans, a poor start to the game saw the Soo squad down 5-0 at the end of the first period. The Nepean Knights, another strong team, was the opposition and used their size and speed to keep the Spartans on their heels. The Soo squad however played a better game defensively in the second and third periods, but were unable to get much going on offense. The final score saw the Spartans fall to the Knights 7-, with Nick Hrynuik, the team captain, picking up the lone goal, his sixth of the tournament. The assist went to Tanner Isaacs.
In all, the coaching staff saw improvement from their first tournament earlier in the season. They acknowledge that there is still work to get done before provincials as was evident from facing 2 very strong teams. Practices will continue through the month of July with provincials occurring in Whitby August 7-9.
The team would like to take this opportunity to thank their sponsors Century 21 Choice Realty, Maitland Ford/Young Drivers and Nav Canada who have helped to make this season possible.
