Algoma U Basketball Beats Lambton
Samy Mohamed Sets OCAA Record

The Algoma University Thunderbird Basketball program continued their winning ways with two comfortable wins against the visiting Lambton Lions on Sunday at the George Leach Centre. The women's team battled through a close first half, but eventually cruised to a 73-42 victory. The men were in control of their game from the opening tip and won easily, 92-44.

The women's game was relatively close until the Thunderbirds went on a 19-0 run midway through the 2nd half, sparked by three-pointers from Anna Stilin and Amanda Orr. Brianna Mandolesi led Algoma with 16 points, while Corina Bruni had 7 points, 11 rebounds and 7 assists in the win. Riley Williams had 20 points in a losing cause for Lambton. With the win, Algoma remains alone in 1st place in the OCAA West division with a record of 14-1.

In the men's game, first-year guard Samy Mohamed scored 48 points and set a new OCAA record for most three-pointers made in one game with 14, in a 92-44 rout of Lambton. Fleming College's Tony Duran, who made 12 three-pointers in one game in 2007-08, previously held the record. Mike Lucier had 15 points for Lambton. Algoma sits in 6th place in the OCAA West division with a record of 10-6.

Next action for the women's team is Feb 16-17, as they travel to London and Hamilton to visit Fanshawe and Mohawk. The men's team will travel to North Bay Feb 9 to take on Canadore.

The Thunderbirds will then close out the season with homes games against their cross-town rival Sault College, Wednesday, February 20th at the George Leach Centre.
