Despite Laura Cooper’s 14 points, and 6 rebounds, which earned her player of the game for the Thunderbirds, they were unable to recover from the loss of Bruni, who went out with a knee injury early in the first quarter. The Thunderbirds were unable to effectively set up their offence, and had difficulty handling last year’s OCAA Player of the Year, Sandra Bascoe, who led the Thunder with 20 points.
With 2 minutes left in the first half, the Thunderbirds regained momentum after trailing behind the Thunder by 10 points, closing the gap at 18-18. Meagan Delfre and Cooper led the attack against the Thunder, each netting 2 baskets to end the half down two, 22-20.
The Thunderbirds fought hard in the second half but the Thunder pulled away, playing a very hard physical game in the paint. The Thunder sealed the win in the fourth quarter with a 9-2 run, sending them to the OCAA Championship gold medal game tomorrow evening.
The Thunderbirds will advance to the bronze medal Semi-Finals tomorrow at 9am.
